Hakijat, joiden äidinkieli on muu kuin suomi

Varalan Urheiluopiston opetuskieli on suomi. Ammatillisten opintojen sujuva suorittaminen edellyttää riittävää suomen kielen taitoa. Koulutuksissamme vaadittu kielitaitotaso on B1.1–B1.2. Jos hakijan äidinkieli on muu kuin suomi, hakijan tulee osoittaa, että suomen kielen taito riittää ammatillisiin opintoihin. Kielitaito arvioidaan hakuprosessin aikana, ja sen voi osoittaa aiemmilla todistuksilla ja/tai haastattelussa.

Suomen kielen taito katsotaan yleensä riittäväksi, jos hakija on suorittanut peruskoulun, lukion tai ammatillisen koulutuksen suomen kielellä.

Lukuvuosimaksut toisen asteen opiskelijoille | Annual tuition fees for upper secondary students

1.8.2026 alkaen EU/ETA-alueen ulkopuolisen maan kansalaiselta voidaan periä lukuvuosimaksu. Maksu koskee opiskelijoita, jotka ovat tulleet tai ovat tulossa Suomeen opiskelemaan opiskelijan oleskeluluvalla.

EU/ETA-alueen ulkopuolisilla eli kolmansilla mailla tarkoitetaan kaikkia muita maita kuin Euroopan unionin jäsenvaltioita sekä Islantia, Liechtensteinia, Norjaa ja Sveitsiä.

Lukuvuosimaksu koskee

• Kolmansien maiden kansalaisia, jotka oleskelevat Suomessa opiskelijan oleskeluluvalla (B) tai tilapäisellä (B) oleskeluluvalla.
• Jatkuvalla (A) oleskeluluvalla Suomessa oleskelevia, joiden ensimmäinen oleskelulupa Suomeen on myönnetty opiskelun perusteella.
• Jatkuvalla (A) oleskeluluvalla Suomessa saapuvia henkilöitä, joiden perheenkokoajan oleskelulupa tai perheenkokoajan ensimmäinen oleskelulupa on myönnetty opiskelun perusteella.

Lukuvuosimaksu ei koske Suomen kansalaisia ja

• Pysyvällä (P) oleskeluluvalla Suomessa oleskelevia.
• Jatkuvalla (A) oleskeluluvalla Suomessa oleskelevia (POIKKEUS: ammatillisessa koulutuksessa tilanteet, joissa opiskelijan tai tämän perheenkokoajan lupa tai ensimmäinen lupa on myönnetty opiskelun perusteella).
• Sinisen kortin haltijoita ja niitä, joilla on pitkään oleskelleen kolmannen maan kansalaisen EU-oleskelulupa sekä heidän perheenjäseniään.
• Vaihto-opiskelijoita, joilla korkeintaan vuoden pituinen oleskelulupa.
• Tilapäisen suojelun perusteella maassa olevia (ukrainalaiset).
• Kansainvälistä suojelua saavia (turvapaikka ja toissijainen suojelu).
• Tilauskoulutuksessa opiskelevia.

• Oppivelvollisia opiskelijoita. Alle 18-vuotias perheensä tai huoltajansa mukana Suomeen tullut lapsi on Suomessa oppivelvollinen saatuaan Suomesta kotikunnan. Perheenkokoajan oleskeluluvan myöntöperusteella ei ole merkitystä. Oppivelvolliselle nuorelle opiskelu ja oppimateriaalit ovat ilmaisia kansalaisuudesta riippumatta. Suomeen opiskelutarkoituksessa tuleva opiskelija, joka on muun kuin EU:n jäsenvaltion, Islannin, Liechtensteinin, Norjan tai Sveitsin kansalainen, ei ole oppivelvollinen Suomessa. Tällöin oikeutta maksuttomaan koulutukseen ei ole.

Miten lukuvuosimaksu vaikuttaa oleskelulupaan ja opiskelijavalintaan

• Hakijan lukuvuosimaksuvelvollisuus arvioidaan hakemuksen liitteiden ja Maahanmuuttovirastolta saatavien oleskelulupatietojen perusteella.
• Valitun opiskelijan tulee maksaa lukuvuosimaksu opiskelupaikan vastaanottamisen jälkeen. Maksun suorittaminen on edellytys myönteiselle oleskelulupapäätökselle.
• Jos valittu opiskelija ei vielä ole Suomessa, opiskelijan oleskelulupaa voi hakea Maahanmuuttovirastosta maksun suorittamisen jälkeen. Suomeen voi saapua vasta oleskeluluvan myöntämisen jälkeen.
• Koulutukseen ja opetukseen ei voi osallistua, jos lukuvuosimaksua ei ole maksettu. Tämä koskee myös Suomessa jo asuvaa valittua opiskelijaa, joka on lukuvuosimaksuvelvollinen.
• Lukuvuosimaksu ei sisällä maksutonta ruokailua eikä oppimateriaaleja. Opiskeluhuollon palvelut, kuten terveydenhoito ja kuraattoripalvelut, sekä oppimisen tuki ja erityinen tuki ovat kuitenkin opiskelijan käytettävissä.

Oppisopimuskoulutus

Jos hakija saapuu Suomeen oppisopimuskoulutukseen ja on muun kuin Euroopan unionin jäsenvaltion, Islannin, Liechtensteinin, Norjan tai Sveitsin kansalainen, Suomessa oleskelua varten tarvitaan työntekijän oleskelulupa. Työntekijän oleskeluluvalla oppisopimuskoulutukseen tulevilta ei peritä lukuvuosimaksua.

Opiskelija voi siirtyä oppisopimuskoulutukseen myös opintojen aikana. Tämä ei kuitenkaan poista velvollisuutta maksaa lukuvuosimaksua. Lukuvuosimaksuvelvollisella opiskelijalla ei ole oikeutta oppisopimuskoulutuksen opintososiaalisiin etuuksiin.

Hinnat ja maksuohjeet

Lukuvuosimaksut 1.8.2026 alkaen

Liikunnanohjauksen perustutkinto                                          16 000 €

Liikunnan ja valmennuksen ammattitutkinto                      9 000 €

Tutkinnonosien maksut määräytyvät tutkinnonosan opiskeluun käytettävien opetusjaksojen määrästä.

• Ensimmäisen lukuvuoden maksu maksetaan kokonaisuudessaan ennen opintojen alkamista. Maksu palautetaan vain, jos opiskelijaksi valittu ei voi aloittaa opintoja, koska oleskelulupaa ei myönnetä. Lukuvuodeksi katsotaan viisi opetusperiodia opintojen aloituspäivästä lukien. Mahdolliset kesäajan opinnot sisältyvät lukuvuosimaksuun.
• Seuraavien lukuvuosien maksun suuruus määräytyy opintojen alussa suunnitellun opintojen keston mukaan yhden opetusperiodin tarkkuudella. Yhden periodin hinta on 1/5 koko lukuvuoden maksusta. Maksu on suoritettava ennen niiden opintojen alkua, joihin laskutus perustuu.
  • Vastuuopettaja ja opiskelija voivat päivittää arvioidun valmistumisajankohdan tai opintojen päättymisajankohdan kirjallisesti ennen uuden lukuvuoden alkua.
  • Jos opinnot jatkuvat suunniteltua pidempään, uuden suunnitellun opiskeluajan mukainen lukuvuosimaksu on maksettava ennen opintojen jatkumista.

• Maksettua lukuvuosimaksua ei palauteta, jos opinnot keskeytyvät.

• Jos opinnot keskeytyvät tilapäisesti lain ammatillisesta koulutuksesta (30.12.2020/1218) 96 §:ssä mainitusta syystä, jo maksettu keskeytysajalle kohdistuva lukuvuosimaksun osa hyvitetään seuraavan lukuvuoden maksussa keskeytyksen keston mukaisesti. Hyvitykseen oikeuttavan keskeytyksen tulee kestää vähintään yhden opetusperiodin ajan, ja hyvitys tehdään vain täysiltä periodeilta. Tätä lyhyemmistä keskeytyksistä ei myönnetä hyvitystä.
• Jos lukuvuosimaksuvelvollisuus päättyy kesken lukuvuoden oleskeluluvan perusteen muuttumisen vuoksi, jo maksetusta lukuvuosimaksusta voi hakea palautusta. Palautusta on haettava kuuden kuukauden kuluessa maksuvelvollisuuden päättymisestä. Palautettava osuus kohdistuu aikaan, jolta maksuvelvollisuutta ei enää ole.

Applicants whose native language is not Finnish

The language of instruction at Varala Sports Institute is Finnish. Successful completion of vocational studies requires a sufficient command of Finnish. The required language level in our programmes is B1.1–B1.2. If an applicant’s native language is not Finnish, the applicant must demonstrate that their Finnish skills are sufficient for vocational studies. Language skills are assessed during the application process and can be verified with previous certificates and/or an interview.

As a general rule, Finnish language skills are considered sufficient if the applicant has completed comprehensive school, upper secondary education, or vocational education in Finnish.

Annual tuition fees for students from outside the EU/EEA from 1 August 2026

From 1 August 2026, tuition fees may be charged to students from outside the EU/EEA. The fee applies to students who have come to Finland, or are coming to Finland, to study with a student residence permit. Third-country nationals are citizens of countries other than the member states of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.

Who must pay the tuition fee

Tuition fees apply to:

• Third‑country nationals who reside in Finland with a student residence permit (B) or a temporary residence permit (B).
• Persons residing in Finland with a continuous residence permit (A), whose first residence permit in Finland has been granted based on studies.
• Persons residing in Finland with a continuous residence permit (A), whose sponsor’s (family reunification case) residence permit or sponsor’s first residence permit has been granted based on studies.

Who does not have to pay the tuition fee

Finnish citizens and the following groups are not required to pay the tuition fee:

• Persons residing in Finland with a permanent residence permit (P).
• Persons residing in Finland with a continuous residence permit (A).
  (EXCEPTION: in vocational education, situations where the student or the student’s sponsor in family reunification case has been granted a residence permit or the first residence permit based on studies.)
• Holders of an EU Blue Card and persons holding an EU long‑term resident’s permit for third‑country nationals, as well as their family members.
• Exchange students who have a residence permit valid for a maximum of one year.
• Persons who, at the start of their studies, hold a residence permit based on temporary protection (Ukrainian nationals). Temporary protection ends on 4 March 2027.
• Persons receiving international protection (asylum or subsidiary protection).
• Students enrolled in commissioned education (tailored training purchased by an external party).

• Compulsory education students. A child under the age of 18 who has moved to Finland with their family or guardian is subject to compulsory education in Finland once a municipality of residence has been granted. The grounds on which the sponsor’s residence permit has been issued are not relevant. For a young person subject to compulsory education, studies and learning materials are free of charge regardless of citizenship. A student who comes to Finland for study purposes and is a citizen of a country other than an EU Member State, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland is not subject to compulsory education in Finland. In such cases, there is no entitlement to free education.

How tuition fee liability affects residence permits and student admission

• Tuition fee liability is assessed based on the applicant’s supporting documents and residence permit information obtained from the Finnish Immigration Service. After accepting a study place, the admitted student must pay the first-year tuition fee within the given deadline.
• If the admitted student is not yet in Finland, a student residence permit can be applied for from the Finnish Immigration Service after the fee has been paid. Arrival in Finland is possible only after the permit has been granted.
• Participation in education and teaching is not possible if the tuition fee has not been paid. This also applies to admitted students who already live in Finland and are subject to tuition fees.
• The tuition fee does not include free meals or learning materials. However, student welfare services, such as healthcare and student counselling services, as well as learning support and special needs support, are available.

Apprenticeship training

For apprenticeship training in Finland, citizens of countries other than the member states of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland need a residence permit for an employed person in order to stay in Finland. Students entering apprenticeship training with this type of permit are not required to pay tuition fees.

A student may also transfer to apprenticeship training during their studies. This does not remove the obligation to pay tuition fees.

Students who are subject to tuition fees are not entitled to student social benefits during apprenticeship training.

Prices and payment instructions

Tuition fees from 1 August 2026

Vocational qualification in sports instruction                                                 16 000 €

Fees for individual qualification units are based on the number of teaching periods required to complete the unit.

• First academic year fee: The fee must be paid in full before the studies begin. It is refunded only if the admitted student cannot start their studies because a residence permit is not granted. One academic year consists of five teaching periods counted from the study start date. Any summer studies are included in the academic year fee.
• Fees for subsequent academic years: The amount is based on the planned duration of studies agreed at the start of the studies, calculated to one teaching period. One teaching period costs one fifth (1/5) of the full academic year fee. The fee must be paid before the studies covered by the invoice begin.
  • The estimated graduation date or study end date can be updated in writing before the start of a new academic year.
  • If studies continue longer than planned, the tuition fee for the new planned study period must be paid before the studies can continue.

• Paid academic year fees are not refunded if the studies are discontinued.

• Temporary interruption of studies: If studies are temporarily interrupted for a reason referred to in Section 96 of the Act on Vocational Education (30 December 2020 / 1218), the part of the fee already paid for the interruption period will be credited toward the following academic year’s tuition fee according to the length of the interruption. The interruption must last at least one full teaching period to qualify for a credit. Shorter interruptions do not qualify.
• End of tuition fee liability during the academic year: If the obligation to pay tuition fees ends during the academic year because the basis of the residence permit changes, a refund of the paid fee can be requested. The refund must be requested within six months of the end of the payment obligation. The refunded amount covers the period for which the student is no longer liable to pay the fee.
